Moving Packing Checklist: How Pros Wrap Furniture So Nothing Gets Scratched

Moving Packing Checklist: How Pros Wrap Furniture So Nothing Gets Scratched

Most moving damage happens in the hallway, not on the freeway. A sofa arm against a door frame, a table leg on the stairs, a mirror leaning on the wrong box. Good packing prevents almost all of it.

Four weeks before

  • Walk through every room and decide what you are not taking: sell, donate or toss it now.
  • Book your mover and your moving date. Ask what packing they do and what is left to you.
  • Start collecting supplies: boxes in several sizes, packing paper, tape, markers.

Two weeks before

  • Pack what you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, decor, the garage shelves.
  • Label each box on the side, not the top — with the room and a short list of what is inside.
  • Keep heavy items in small boxes. A large box of books is how backs and box bottoms break.

The week of the move

  • Pack the kitchen, leaving one plate, cup and pan per person.
  • Take photos of TV and computer cables before unplugging them.
  • Empty dressers of anything fragile or heavy.
  • Set aside an essentials bag: documents, chargers, medication, a change of clothes, keys.

How professionals protect furniture

  • Moving blankets on every piece. Padded blankets go on first, then tape or film holds them in place.
  • No plastic straight on wood. Stretch film directly on a finished surface can trap moisture and mark it. Blanket first, film over the blanket.
  • Corners and legs get extra padding. That is where most dents happen.
  • Mirrors, glass and art travel upright, padded on both faces, never flat under other items.
  • Disassembly. Bed frames, table legs and large shelves come apart so they do not have to be forced around corners. Keep screws in a labeled bag taped to the piece.

Protecting the home, not just the furniture

Floor runners on hardwood and carpet, guards on door frames and banisters, padding on elevator walls. It takes the crew ten minutes and saves your deposit.

Moving day

  1. Be there when the crew arrives and walk them through what goes and what stays.
  2. Point out anything fragile or valuable before it is wrapped.
  3. Do a last walk through closets, cabinets and the garage before the truck leaves.
