Moving Out of a Los Angeles Apartment: Elevators, Parking and Building Rules

Moving out of an apartment in Los Angeles is rarely about the boxes. It is about the building: the elevator, the loading dock, the parking out front and the rules your manager will enforce on the day.
Talk to your building manager early
Call or email at least two weeks ahead. Ask:
- Are moves allowed only on certain days or hours?
- Do you need to reserve the freight elevator or a moving time slot?
- Is there a loading dock or loading zone, and do you need to book it?
- Does the building require a certificate of insurance (COI) from the moving company?
- Is a refundable move-in or move-out deposit required?
The certificate of insurance
Many managed buildings in LA will not let a moving crew in without a COI naming the building as additional insured. Your mover sends it directly to management. Ask for it as soon as you book — it is the most common reason a move starts late.
Parking the truck
A box truck needs space close to the entrance. Check the street signs for street-sweeping days, red curbs and time limits. Rules differ between Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and other cities, so check with the city where you are moving — some issue temporary no-parking signs for moving days if you apply in advance.
If the truck has to park far away, every item travels farther. On an hourly move, you pay for every one of those steps.
Elevators and long carries
- Ask for elevator pads to be hung before the move starts.
- Measure your largest pieces and the elevator door. If the sofa does not fit, it may need to go on its side, be disassembled or take the stairs.
- In buildings without an elevator, tell your mover the floor and the number of flights when you ask for a price.
Leaving the apartment clean
Take photos of every room after the furniture is out. Patch small nail holes if your lease allows, and hand over all keys, fobs and garage remotes on the same day.
Why a walkthrough matters here
An estimator who sees your building — the elevator, the hallway turns, the parking — can price the move accurately and send the right size crew. That is how a flat rate stays flat.
